Ms. Mary Ellen Hogan

Mary Ellen Hogan US Army Nurse, Retired Nurse Practitioner Mary Ellen Hogan, 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday at her lifelong home. Mary Ellen was born December 4, 1943 in Cambridge, MA to Paul and Bertha “Bozena” Hogan. She went to Massachusetts General School of Nursing. After graduation, Mary Ellen was stationed in Japan as a nurse in the United States Army, caring for wounded soldiers during the Vietnam War. After leaving the military, she graduated from the University of Maryland with her B.A. in Nursing and eventually became a Nurse Practitioner. Before her retirement, Mary Ellen worked for over 40 years as a burn care nurse at Shriners Hospital for Children. She was passionate about providing care for patients and training the future nursing workforce. She was an active member of the League of Women Voters and the Greater Lowell Area Democrats; recognized by GLAD as an outstanding Woman of the Year. She was also involved with the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. Mary Ellen was a devoted member of Holy Family Parish and the former Sacred Heart Parish, where she had many friends. She served as a Eucharistic Minister. She remembers with fondness Fathers Don, Gil, John, Randall and many other wonderful priests. She is remember for her charity and her love of animals; especially her beloved cats: Nicky, Samantha, Bullet, Tobe, Genny, Rustie, Eboy and many others. We wish to thank the many people at D’Youville Health Center, and Lowell General Hospital for caring for her. Mary Ellen is survived by her sister Kathleen, her two brothers Paul and Thomas; and two nieces Emily and Annie; who love her very much. Say hello to Mom and Dad and Grandpa and Grandmother. Mary Ellen’s FUNERAL will begin on FRIDAY MORNING 9 o’clock from the Funeral Home, followed by her FUNERAL MASS at 10 o’clock at HOLY FAMILY PARISH – ST. MARIE’S CHURCH, corner of Chamberlain and Grafton Sts. Lowell. Burial will take place in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Lowell.
