Lillian Lee Smith Beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother LOWELL—Lillian (Begley) (Lee) Smith, 92, passed away on December 25, 2018 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Lillian was married for 32 years to Thomas M. Lee, Sr. who died January 7, 1980, and for 20 years to Donald R. Smith who died October 24, 2016. Lil always told everyone, “I was married to the two best guys in the world.” Lillian Begley was born in Lowell on February 27, 1926, a daughter of the late John J. and Mary J. (Fay) Begley. She was a graduate of the Sacred Heart Grammar School and Lowell High School with the class of 1943. Lillian was employed at McQuade’s Department Store in Downtown Lowell in the Business Office. When she married Thomas Lee, she remained at home to raise her family. Then, when her children were grown, she returned to McQuade’s for some time. Lil also worked in the Business Office of the Lowell School Department. She later returned home, this time to help raise her grandchildren. Lillian was a caregiver. Not only to her family, but to everyone around her. She was a good neighbor and a wonderful wife and mother, always spreading love wherever she went. The Catholic Church was a big part of Lil’s life. Lil was very active in the Sacred Heart Parish. She held membership in the Holy Rosary Sodality and was involved in many of the Sacred Heart Minstrel Shows. Lil enjoyed bowling and bowled in a league weekly for over 50 years. She also enjoyed playing cards with her friends. Lil and Don also enjoyed playing cribbage with the Chelmsford Seniors. Lil loved to travel and took trips Hawaii, Ireland, and European Tours. She took her grandchildren to New York City to see she shows at Radio City Music Hall. She also loved Hampton and Seabrook Beach. She and Don attended all of the grandchildren’s sporting events. Lil’s grandchildren and great grandchildren meant the world to her. Lillian is survived by her daughter, Linda Lee Giordano and her husband James (Chuck) Giordano; her son John J. Lee and his wife Susan Lee. Lillian was the mother of the late Thomas M. Lee, Jr. who died in 1981. Lillian also leaves her three grandchildren, Meghan Lee, Katherine Barry and her husband Brian, and Matthew Lee; three great grandchildren, Brian Barry, Ellen Barry, and Brendan Barry. Lil also leaves Billy Warren, who was always like a third son to her. She was also the step mother of Stephen Smith and his wife Dianne, Carol (Smith) Rodgers and her husband Richard, Clare Smith, and Lawrence Smith and his wife Lori. Lillian was the sister of the late Francis Begley, Eileen Begley Miller, John J. Begley, Henry Begley and James Begley. FUNERAL NOTICE SMITH—In Lowell, December 25, 2018 at her home, Lillian (Begley) (Lee) Smith, 92. Family and friends are invited to attend her Funeral Mass on Saturday Morning at 10 o’clock at St. Margaret’s Church, 374 Stevens St., Lowell. Burial will be private.
