Norberto Matias Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather Decorated Vietnam Army Veteran LOWELL—Norberto Matias passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, January 24, 2016. He was the loving husband of Nilda Torres. Norberto was born in Salinas, Puerto Rico on January 1, 1950, a son of the late Norberto Matias and Josefina Santiago. He attended school in Puerto Rico until his family moved to New York. Norberto was a decorated Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. He served from 1969 until 1971. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Combat Infantrymans Badge, the Army Commendation Medal, the Air Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Norberto moved to Lowell about 20 years ago, and has lived here since. He was employed as a maintenance worker in the hospitality industry and later at the E.N. Rogers V.A. Hospital in Bedford, MA. Norberto loved to dance. He loved his games, especially baseball and the New York Yankees. He was a true homebody and enjoyed being at home with family. Some of his hobbies included crosswords, movies, SiFi’s, and collecting things. Norberto was very friendly and had a deep faith in God. Norberto leaves his wife, Nilda Torres; his children, Norberto Matias, Alex Matias, Eric Matias, and Chelyse Matias; four grandchildren, Norberto, Aleryse, and twins Noriel and Norielyse. He will be dearly missed by his family.
