Mr. Edward J. "Ted" Ryan
July 8, 1936 - March 24, 2022
Edward J. “Ted” Ryan Beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather Edward J. ”Ted” Ryan passed away peacefully at home after a period of declining health, during which time his adoring family was by his side daily. A lifelong resident of Lowell, Ted was born on July 8, 1936 to Edmund and Mary (Day) Ryan. He grew up in the Highlands section of Lowell, attended Lowell schools and graduated from Keith Academy. At 19 years old, Ted began working at Raytheon Company in Bedford, MA, during which time he earned his bachelors degree at Fitchburg State University, and worked at Raytheon for 48 years until his retirement. Ted was the beloved husband of Margaret M. (O’Brien) “Peggy” Ryan of 61 years with whom he resided in the Belvidere section of Lowell. He was lovingly protective of and deeply loyal to his wife “Peggy”, his sons Ed Ryan and Terence “Terry” Ryan and his five grandchildren. He cherished time with family, especially when everyone was together celebrating, whether it was Sunday dinners for each person’s birthday, which he and Peggy hosted or trips every year to their house on Cape Cod and cooking lobsters in the yard over the July 4th weekend. Ted always went above and beyond to support his family, whether that was teaching his grandchildren how to play baseball, offering encouraging words during tough academic semesters or providing the perfect solution to any engineering obstacle. He was forever on the sidelines cheering his grandchildren on through years of sports, school events, graduations and made it his priority to know what was going on in their lives daily. Once retired, he and his wife took time to travel in the U.S., including annual trips to Florida and New York City and also traveled to Europe. He was the oldest amongst his five siblings and always prioritized “keeping in touch”. A deeply selfless person, Ted was always asking how everyone else was doing, up until his final hours. In addition to his wife Peggy, Ted is survived by two sons, Ed and his wife Diane (Muldoon) Ryan of Groton, Terry and his wife Kerry (Quealey) Ryan of Westford, and five grandchildren, Sarah, Kelly, Matthew, Alexandra and Emily Ryan. Ted was brother to John Ryan and his wife Sandra of Tewksbury, Paula Malavich of Lowell, and Robert Ryan and his wife Eileen of Hopkinton. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Marylou Carota of Lowell, Paul Pearsall of Chelmsford, and numerous nieces and nephews. Ted is pre-deceased by his sister Miriam “Mim” Pearsall and two brothers-in-law, Paul Carota and William Malavich.
