Thomas M. Sweeney, M.D. Lowell Dermatologist LOWELL—Thomas M. Sweeney, M.D. a Lowell Physician for over 40 years, and a member of a well-known Lowell family, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2015, with his family by his side, at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill. Dr. Sweeney was 82 years old. He was the beloved husband of Lorraine (Scholefield) Sweeney, who passed away in 1992. Thomas M. Sweeney was born in Lowell on April 7, 1933, one of 9 children of James A. and Agnes (Blanchard) Sweeney. Tom was a graduate of the Sacred Heart Grammar School, Lowell High School, Class of 1950, and a graduate with honors of Boston College. He earned his M.D. degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1958. Tom married Lorraine Scholefield in 1956 in St. Peter’s Church in Lowell. Together they celebrated 36 years of marriage and raised four wonderful children. A Captain in the United States Air Force, Dr. Sweeney served in the U.S. Army Medical Services Unit at the William Beaumont Army Hospital, where he completed his internship. In June 1960, he completed the primary course in aviation medicine at the US Air Force Aerospace Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. As a flight surgeon, he assumed the duties of director of aerospace medicine at Westover in 1961, and was awarded the Air Force commendation medal for meritorious and achievement in his position as director of Aerospace medicine at Westover. Upon returning home from the military, Dr. Sweeney was engaged as a resident physician at the Massachusetts Memorial Hospitals in Boston where he specialized in the study of diseases of the skin. Dr. Sweeney started his practice on Central Street, later moving to Merrimack Street in Downtown Lowell. He also oversaw a Dermatology Clinic at Boston University Medical Center Hospital. He retired from practicing medicine in 2000. In his free time, Dr. Sweeney enjoyed playing golf, bowling, and traveling to Florida. He liked fishing with his children when they were younger, working in his yard, and watching baseball games. Dr. Sweeney always put others needs before his own, always wishing for his children and grandchildren to be happy. Dr. Sweeney belonged to many professional and medical organizations throughout his career. He also held membership in the The Hundred Club of Massachusetts, the Full Gospel Business Man’s Fellowship in America, and the MSPCA. In his younger years, Dr. Sweeney was very involved at the Immaculate Conception Church, where among other things, he served on the Parish Council. Dr. Sweeney is survived by his four children, Thomas M. Sweeney, II, M.D. and his wife Maria E. Sweeney of Sarasota, FL, Judith A. Salerno and her husband John Salerno of Tewksbury, Kevin C. Sweeney and his wife Michele Sweeney of Derry, NH, and Pamela J. Jones and her husband Christopher Jones of Billerica; seven grandchildren, Thomas M. Sweeney, III and his wife Tara, and Sean M. Sweeney, all of San Diego, CA, Benjamin M. Sweeney of Sarasota, FL, Kyle A. Sweeney and Kiera B. Sweeney both of Derry, NH, and Marissa A. Jones and Morgan L. Jones both of Billerica; his sister, Sr. Teresa Marie Sweeney, O.S.F. of Anapolis, Goias, Brazil; his sisters-in-law Eleanor Sweeney of Pompton Plains, NJ and Donna Sweeney of Nashua, NH; his companion, Barbara Bowe of Lowell; also many nieces, nephews, and cousins, including his dear cousin Sheila Sweeney of Chelmsford. Dr. Sweeney was the brother of the late Katherine Redding, Dr. Felix Sweeney, James Sweeney, Charles Sweeney, Joseph Sweeney, Dr. Eugene Sweeney, and Francis Sweeney, and cousin of the late Joseph Sweeney. FUNERAL NOTICE SWEENEY—In Haverhill, August 31, 2015 at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House, Thomas M. Sweeney, M.D. of Lowell, beloved husband of the late Lorraine Sweeney. Family and friends may call at the FAY McCABE FUNERAL HOME, 105 MOORE STREET on THURSDAY from 4 until 8 P.M. Dr. Sweeney’s Funeral will begin on FRIDAY MORNING at 9 o’clock from the Funeral Home, followed by his FUNERAL MASS at 10 o’clock at HOLY FAMILY PARISH – ST. MARIE’S CHURCH, corner of Chamberlain and Grafton Sts. Lowell. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Tewksbury.
