Mr. James A. Dowd

STONEHAM – James A. Dowd beloved partner of Kathleen Ahern, died on Monday October 9, 2023 at Belmont Manor Nursing Home surrounded by family. Born in Lowell on August 19, 1946 he was the son of the late John and Alice (Welch) Dowd. He was a 1964 graduate of Keith Academy and attended Mount Wachusett Community College. Mr. Dowd grew up in the Centralville neighborhood of Lowell and was an altar boy at St. Michael’s Church. For 30 years he was proud employee of New England Telephone and the go to “phone guy’ for family and friends having installed or moved phone lines for nearly everyone he knew. An avid golfer, he was a 52 year member of Mt. Pleasant Golf Club and ran the Thursday Twi-League for years. He had loads of fun with his Thursday night and Sunday morning golf foursomes and was always up for their antagonizing banter. He passed on his love of golf to his son John and his ability to fix anything (or at least attempt) to his son Jim. Although not a skier, he was more than happy to take Jim and John on ski trips all over New England. Recently, his love and knowledge of golf translated to him being a phenomenal PGA Tour fantasy league player. Jim is survived by his two sons: James Dowd and his wife Rose (Smith) of Chelmsford, MA; John Dowd and his wife Molly (Nolan) of Charlestown, MA; and grandchildren Owen and Eilis Dowd of Chelmsford. He was “Papa” to Mason Ahern of Stoneham, MA. He is survived by his brother David and wife Angela of Chelmsford, MA and was predeceased by his brother John “Jack” and wife Jean Dowd. Family and friends may call at THE FAY McCABE FUNERAL HOME, 105 MOORE STREET IN LOWELL on THURSDAY, from 4 until 7 PM. James’s FUNERAL will begin on FRIDAY MORNING at 9:00 AM from the Funeral Home, followed by his FUNERAL MASS at 10 o’clock at ST. MICHAEL’S CHURCH, 12 6TH STREET , Lowell. Burial will take place in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Lowell.
