Mrs. Etta L. Bachelder

Etta L. Bachelder Mother and “Nana” to her family Manchester, NH—Etta L. (Queenan) Bachelder, 93, passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at the Mt. Carmel Health Care Center following an extended illness. She lived in Lowell for seventy five years before moving to Tyngsboro, MA. Etta lived with her daughter in Hudson, NH before moving to Mt. Carmel Health Care Center in Manchester, NH. At the age of five, she developed scarlet fever and had to learn to walk again. Etta was also a 23 year survivor of breast cancer. Born in Lowell on October 17, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Walter F. and Etta L. (Freeman) Queenan. Etta was a graduate of the Sacred Heart Grammar School and Immaculate Conception High School, where she had perfect attendance and was a member of the National Honor Society for four years. She is an alumnus of Salem State College, graduating with a BS Degree in Education. Etta taught in Milford, NH and Fort Devens Army Base in Ayer, MA for many years. She also worked for GMAC, Roger Hildreth Real Estate, Aetna Insurance Company, Father John’s Medicine and Interstate United. A member of Sacred Heart Parish for over fifty years, Etta was a Girl Scout Leader and a member of The Legion of Mary. After retiring, she spent many years volunteering with the House of Hope and Friends In Need in Lowell. Etta also frequently visited her long time friend, the late Father Edward Randall, OMI in Jenkins, Kentucky. Spending time with her family was one of her greatest joys. She enjoyed vacationing with them at Lake Winnipesaukee, as well as several trips to Disney World. After retiring at 71, Etta traveled extensively including trips to Ireland, Hawaii, California, Venezuela, Egypt, horseback riding in the Canadian Rockies, Europe, Scandinavia, white water rafting the Colorado River and dog sledding in Alaska at the age of 81. Etta’s most memorable adventure was a two week safari to Africa. Etta is survived by her son, Walter F. Bachelder and his wife Carolina of Tyngsboro, MA; two daughters, Jo Berman and her husband Marty of Framingham, MA and Meredith, NH, and Virginia “Ginger” Turgeon and her husband Wayne of Hudson, NH; her grandchildren, Gini Wolski and her husband Steve of Tyngsboro, MA, Krysi Abrams of Hudson, NH, Lynn Van Etten and her husband Bill of Newbury, MA, Jeffery Bachelder of Tyngsboro, MA, Sean Berman of Brooklyn, NY, and John Milano, U.S. Army, stationed in Korea; her great-grandchildren, Matthew and Nicole Wolski, Madison, Tess, Grace, Sasha, and Holden Van Etten, and Kaley and Samual Bachelder.
